Database has gotten relatively large

I upgraded a database from SQL2000 to SQL2005 and it went pretty smooth. After the transition was made, I backed up the DB. The size of the database was as expected, about 5 GB. About 5 hours later, a maintenance plan executed a few optimization jobs in the following order: Reorganize Index, Rebuild Index, Shrink Database, Update Statistics. Soon after that, another job backed up the database and it was then 32 GB. During the time after the first backup, no one was really using the database.

I've been trying to track this down for several days. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

Thanks,
Bobby Crawford
SQL Workbench has some nifty reports you can run, one of which is Disk Usage, it details how much space each table is using. THis should help you track it down.

Database Hammer & Stress testing

Hello all
I am trying to stress test an SQL2000 server running on Windows 2003.
I am using the reskit utility database hammer.
The utility creates a table with 10,000,000 rows in it fine but when I try
to use the query/update part of the tool(procmaster.exe), it fails and I get
an error: 'Problem encountered during processing -2147217913'.
There is plenty of space in my log and data files etc.
Does anybody know what might be going on?
Thanks in advance.
Jane

You may want to run profiler to see where it is having problems.

It looks like it is a code problem iin the utility then. I have done some
more research and found that there is a bug in the code. I don't know VB
though to try to edit it so will have to think of something else.

The article does not relate to a SQL Server back end, therefore if you did
profile this you can get the exact statement that fails and see what error
message Query Analyser would give you. If it is a datatype problem then you
may want to remove the column from the test or possibly install a different
version of MDAC.

Hi,
seems the first output from
USE MyDb; EXEC sp_MSforeachtable 'EXEC sp_spaceused [?]'
was missing some tables...
I ran UpdateUsage and the sp_spaceused again and found the reason for the
growth.

Database Engine Connection Error.

I got the sql2005 std edition at the msdn rollout, and the vs2005 studio. I uninstalled sql2000 and now, cannot connect to the database engine.

I get the following error message with a link to an page that offers no info. What's up and how can I get it to work? Please, help.

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=2&LinkId=20476

Some questions which can help troubleshoot the real cause:

1) because uninstalalation of SQL2000, could you connect to SQL2005 STD?

2) Check the remote connection setting in SQL Server Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections, note you need to restart SQL after changing the remote connection settings there.

3) Do you installed as named instance, if you could you check if the sqlbrowser service is enabled and running?

Hi hungfut

I am also getting the same error.

(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)

When I try to connect to SQL Server Surface Area Configuration I am getting the following error.

Specified argument was out of the range of valid values.
Parameter name: index (System.Windows.Forms)

Because of this I could not verify the remote connection setting.

My named pipe instance are set to default (\\.\pipe\sql\query). Aslo IP1 & IP2 is enabled.

The SQL erver was running well. Until I installed the SP1. My SQl server is standard version. Please help me in this regard.

Database data file does not auto-grow

Dear all,
We are using SQL2000 sp4 on Windows 2000 Svr.
We found one of the database size become zero in Enterprise manager.
We have checked the database setting and the database is already set
auto-growth, without limit, by 1000Mb each time.
The data file size reach 6G now.
Is there anything we miss? That's the first time we meet this case.
We have checked the Harddisk drive for the data file and it still have over
100G space.

Do you get an error message saying the filegroup is full?
What is the output of EXEC sp_spaceused?
Auto-growth is usually a bad idea and isn't something I would normally
recommend for a production application. Why would you want to grow a
6GB database in 1GB increments?

Whenever possible please post enough code to reproduce your problem.
Including CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements usually helps.
State what version of SQL Server you are using and specify the content

State what version of SQL Server you are using and specify the content
of any error messages.
