Database has invalid owner

I get this error when I try to view the database diagram. This is strange because it was about two weeks ago that I created and edited the database diagram. What is wrong with my login now as compared to when I did those edits?

The error suggests to use the ALTER AUTHORIZATION to change to a valid login. I am using windows authentication. If my login (the database ownere) is not the valid login then who is?

And what are the database diagram support objects that it suggests I install. I never heard of them, and where are they? Why didn't I need to install anything special when I worked on the diagrams two weeks ago?

Error message:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express

Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. To continue, first use the Files page of the Database Properties dialog box or the ALTER AUTHORIZATION statement to set the database owner to a valid login, then add the database diagram support objects.

BUTTONS:
OK

Does anyone have any suggestions?

dbuchanan

Right click the database in question and select "properties". Select the "Files" from 'Select a Page' on the left side.

On the right side browse or add the owner that you want.

If things dont work then try using the sa owner. I also faced the same problem but when I sed the sa login then it worked wonders.

database free spaces

I have a database total size 2710 MB. It is 2699 MB used and 11 MB free.
This is what I see it in the view taskpad of the database. I did setup the
database for unrestrict growth. But the free spaces so small, do I need to
adjust it? If I do, I need it done in a hurry. Can someone provide
sugestions? Thanks.

Database free space: big discrepancy between sp_spaceused and EM taskpad view

I am monitoring free space in my database so I can manually grow the
data file rather than relying on autogrow. I get the free space by
using the 'unallocated space' value returned by sp_spaceused.
Today I was alerted that there was less than 2% free space remaining
in my database. I verified with sp_spaceused and it was reporting ~8GB
unallocated space in a ~500GB database. Then I checked the free space
by looking at the taskpad view for my database in Enterprise Manager.
This showed ~60GB free. I ran a profiler trace to see what EM is doing
to calculate free space but I can't tell what calculations it does,
other than to see that in addition to sp_spaceused it uses the
following two commands:
select sum(convert(float,size)) * (8192.0/1024.0) from dbo.sysfiles
and
DBCC showfilestats
Am I wrong in thinking that the 'unallocated space' and free space
reported by EM should be similar? Is one a more reliable indicator
than the other?
ThanksHi
Before using sp_spaceused run DBCC UPDATEUSAGE command

Database diagrams

Hi
I'm trying to view a SQL 2000 Diagram that was created by my colleage. When
I click on "Design Diagram" it appears blank (ie it does show any of the
table links). However if I create a diagram I can view that and my colleage I
can view the diagram that I've created and my colleage can also view it.
Any ideas.
TIA
Dwight
Dwight,
Did you apply Visual Studio Service Pack 6?
If so, this has happened to many people. I don't know if
there is a knowledge base article or supported fix for the
issue. Others have reported working around the issue by
installing an older version of mdt2df.dll

Database Diagrams

I have a question concerning the diagramming tool in SQL
Server 2000. On the development server the keys show up
in the table view of the Enterprise Manager and the
diagramming tool works as expected. However, when we
imported the database into production, the keys did not
come forward so the diagramming tool cannot diagram
relationships. The interesting thing is that the
application works as expected, except the keys dont show
up in the table view.
Question...how is this possible? How do I add the keys
to the design without disrupting the application?
ThanxYou are correct in the assumption that the application works due to the
error checking.
I'm working wiht Mike on this problem and somewhere along the line, all of
the keys got dropped in the production database. We want to recreate them
in the development database and then run the scripts against the production
database to create the keys and the relationships that are required. Is
there any way to automatically compare two versions of the database and
generate a batch of the the ALTER TABLE commands? Or am I looking at
writing each statement inividually?
Thanks

database diagram in server explorer

I've created a connection to an SQL 2000 server in an asp.net 2.0 web application using Visual Studio 2005. When I view the database node in the server explorer, it doesn't show the database diagram node. Is there something I need to load to make this node appear? Thanks.

You might want to post this question to the Visual Studio group. I can't recall if this facility is version dependent. They would be able to better answer your question.

Database Designing tools

Hi all,
Does anyone know how I can design the database schema. I mean what tools can be used to the design the database and view the table relationships, etc. TIA.

Vik!Enterprise Manager? Makes a pretty good job in SQL Server for this.

Database creation from inside of Visual C#

When I create a database from inside of Visual C# Express, why can't I view it with the manager from the SQL Server Express Edition? I mean, it does not appear at all. Is there any problem?

hi,

chances are you are using a User Instance, so that you can usually not "browse" your database using a "standard" connection via SQL Server Management Studio.. the article explains how to connect to User Instance databases via other clients than the calling application..

regards

|||

Hi

Well, I followed the article closely and retrieved the pipe and ran the command "sqlcmd -S np:\\.\pipe\010E053B-3912-43\tsql\query" and I received the following error:

"HResult 0x2, Level 16, State 1
Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2].
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : An error has occurred while establi
shing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failu
re may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not
allow remote connections..
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : Login timeout expired."

I enabled Remote Connections from Surface Area Controll, stoped the service, restarted it, and it gives me the same error. How can I connect to a User Instance with the SQL Server Management? I did not saw such option ...

Also I want to ask if there are some resources to learn for an absolute beginner SQL Server Express. Some recomandations would be nice.

|||

hi,

try the SQL Server Configuration Manager as well... there you can enable the desired nework protocol..

regards

|||

Check out the FAQ at the top of this forum, you will find instructions on connecting Management Studio to a User Instance.

Enabling remote connections is not required, particularly since User Instances only support local connections. If you bravely read through the entire error you got, you'll see that the problem you're having is a timeout. This is a particularly bad error message that gets throwen for basically every connection problem (hey, I wasn't here when they wrote it). The important bit is usually at the end in parenthasis.

In your case I'll bet your User Instance isn't started so you're timing out trying to connect. The FAQ explains the details of how to get this to work.
